Kids Mindfulness Classes

Teaching the foundations of yoga and mindfulness to support social, emotional and physical development.

Yoga & MINDFULNESS CLASSES FOR KIDS

"Unlock your child's potential for a happier, healthier and more fulfilling life. It's time to watch your child thrive."

Your child will learn the foundations of yoga and mindfulness to support social, emotional and physical development.

Your child will learn strategies to support emotional regulation, lower and raise their energy levels, learn to listen to the messages of their body, and how to relax their mind and body to improve their overall health and well-being.

Classes include activities that allow students to connect with themselves to increase self-awareness, connect with each other to build empathy and compassion, and to build a safe community.

What to expect in a kids yoga and mindfulness class.

Classes are trauma informed and activities are adapted to be developmentally appropriate for different ages.

Breath practices to learn how to self-regulate and manage energy levels

Focus practices to learn how to sustain attention on one task

Relaxation practices to learn how to relax body and mind and how to support falling asleep at bedtime

Classes typically include:

Movement practices to learn how to listen to the messages from their body and how to move their body to support their well-being

Mindfulness practices to help foster connection to self, others, and the space around them.

Trauma-informed classes prioritize the well-being and safety of every child. Programs are specially designed to incorporate yoga and mindfulness practices in a sensitive and supportive manner. Classes focus on creating a safe and predictable environment, empowering children to make choices and set boundaries. Through intentional language, sensory awareness, and a focus on self-regulation, classes guide children on an empowering journey. Each child's unique needs are met with empathy and understanding.

I would say that I have felt an increase in my well-being. I apply these practices to small dilemmas and situations that my mind blows out of proportion and that actually aren't as important as I think. By being aware of my emotions and thoughts at times like these, I'm able to choose how to respond instead of just responding. While this hasn't made a huge difference (yet), as I do this more, I'll get better at it, which will end up majorly impacting my well-being. Taking this course has been such a special and educational experience for me. As a high school student who is constantly stressed, the practices that we do and the things we learn have helped me not only deal with the stress, but become a more aware, understanding, and compassionate person- to both myself and others.

Since I’ve started taking classes with Abby, I’ve noticed a huge improvement in the way that I approach my emotions. I’m able to identify what I’m feeling, understand why I’m feeling what I am, and how to deal with my emotions in a way that I had never been able to before. I’m so grateful for all of the insights and kindness that Abby offers, and I’m really looking forward to taking more courses in the future!

“Emmy requests meditations at bedtime often now. She alternates between the breathing one and the tense and relax once which she calls “the body one.” A few nights ago she goes “my legs are still awake so I would like the body one.” And last night she said “my body is tired already so let’s do the breathing one.” It’s so cute!"

What makes The Mindfulness Practice classes different from others?

  • I prioritize creating a safe and inclusive space for every child, valuing their unique experiences and needs.

  • I provide choices and options throughout the class. By offering choices, we honor and respect your child's boundaries, fostering a safe and supportive environment where they can actively participate in a way that feels comfortable for them. This approach promotes self-regulation, encourages autonomy, and supports the individual needs of each child.

  • I avoid physical adjustments and respect personal boundaries, understanding that physical touch can be triggering for some children. In yoga classes that are not trauma-informed, teachers will place their hands on kids to "correct" their pose. Physical touch be triggering, but it can also send the wrong message that children need to be "fixed".  Movement in the body is an experience. My goal is for children to feel joy doing movement, not whether they are doing it "right" or "wrong" per a perceived external standard.

  • I focus on the process and journey of each child's practice, rather than emphasizing a specific pose hierarchy or achievement. This means that there isn't a right or wrong way to practice movement and yoga poses. There is a safe and unsafe way and if children are unsafe we will pause and talk about safety concerns.

  • I encourage open communication and active listening, ensuring that children feel heard and validated in their emotions and experiences.

  • I use gentle and affirming language, avoiding harsh or punitive tones, and promoting self-compassion and self-acceptance. This means that children will not be ostracized or shamed for misbehaving. All behavior is communicating either met or unmet needs. When seeing behavior through this lens, the entire class can show compassion to a person who is having a hard time.

  •  I prioritize emotional and physical safety, provide many ways to experience poses and activity, and include alternatives options as well. This means promoting body autonomy, respecting boundaries, and empowering children to make choices that feel right for them, by providing various options and alternatives for poses and activities.

  • I incorporate mindfulness and grounding techniques to support self-regulation and provide tools for managing stress, anxiety, and overwhelming emotions.

  • I cultivate a non-judgmental environment where children are encouraged to explore, make mistakes, and learn at their own pace without fear of criticism or failure.

  • I  focus on fun and joy by infusing the classes with elements of playfulness, joy, and laughter to create a positive and engaging experience for all.
